The Needs in Saut Mathurine, Dominique, and Marceline

This week Director of Mobilization, Job Joseph met with community leaders in the Second Section of Chanplois (Champlwa). There are three main population centers in this area located near Camp Perrin including: Saut Mathurine, Dominique, and Marceline (Maslin). Despite being one of the areas most affected by the August 14 earthquake, NGO’s and the Haitian government do not have a big presence here due to the remoteness. This is the area where just a few days before on September 27, residents blocked the road to Camp Perrin demanding attention from the State.

The areas around Camp Perrin are among the most affected by the August 14 earthquake.

Job sat down with the section’s CASEC, Pierre Oxene. Organizations wishing to coordinate with Casec Oxene can contact him at (509) 48398846/35386721. The leader of a local handicap association and the leader of the women’s association as well as several other notables participated in the meeting.

These leaders reported that next to no aid has arrived in their communities which are home to around 38,000 people. To date, only a couple of distributions have taken place. CRS came to Dominique one day with tarps and kitchen kits. The local handicap association received some water baggies and twenty-five small bags of rice from another organization.

The leaders reported that their most urgent need is shelter. Tarps, sheet metal, and two by fours would help a lot, they said. After that, they mentioned that funds to buy food and send their children to school are also urgently needed.
